Health Effects and Symptoms of Exposure

Mercury Posioning CycleExposure to mercury is most dangerous when it occurs repeatedly over a long period of time or once in a large amount. Symptoms of exposure include:

  • Tremors in hands, eyelids, or tongue
  • Problems balancing and walking
  • Memory loss and hallucinations
  • Softened gum tissue and sores in the mouth

Birth defects are the most significant long term effect of mercury exposure. Women exposed to mercury have an increased risk of giving birth to children with developmental problems and physical disabilities. Children exposed to mercury also are at higher risk for nervous system damage and developmental delays.

Mother and Child

This study confirms that such effects are lasting, that they are permanent."
